Will I get seasick?

The inland waterways of Britain are nothing like the seas around our coasts. The non-tidal River Thames is untroubled by waves any bigger than a duck’s leg, and the only movement you will feel will be if another boat goes past us too fast. So no, seasickness won’t be an issue.

Is it cold on board in the winter, and hot in the summer?

If only British weather was that predictable! But if it is cold outside we have central heating and/or a woodburning stove on board, and if it’s hot outside we have an air-conditioning unit and lots of windows and hatches.

Can we bring guests on board?

Up to two guests are welcome to join you for dinner or even for a day or two of your holiday (and will be charged for accordingly) – whether you know they are coming before your holiday, or during it (with as much warning as possible please!).

Can we smoke on board?

Smoking is not permitted in or on any part of Excalibur.

Can you cater for dietary needs?

In our pre-holiday/dinner/day-out booking process we will ask for dietary requirements – and will aim to cater for most. Also if there is something you just don’t like (e.g. Aubergines, celery, lamb, tomatoes, Marmite) …. Just tell us, and we’ll keep it out of your way!

Can we bring our dog on board?

Unfortunately we are not able to accommodate animals (other than our own two cats, Berty and Mavis).

What is there to do on board Excalibur?

You will have free access to the onboard WiFi (the signal is better in some places than others along the River!), which provides for onboard TV, but there is also a wireless speaker to attach to the music on your phone. We also provide a limited range of board games, packs of cards, and a nice selection of books.

Can we choose to eat out rather than on board?

Of course! If you see a lovely pub/bistro/restaurant that you would like to try that is fine! If you know of one before the holiday begins we will endeavour to book a table for you. Obviously you would need to pay for that separately. We have a comprehensive list of restaurants if you are looking for inspiration.

What if the River goes into flood?

The Thames is a natural river and is therefore sometimes affected by heavy rain, which makes it flood – there is also the rare possibility of lockclosures. Although both are very unusual during the summer season, sometimes the authorities stop all river traffic, including Excalibur, from moving on part or all of the River. If this is the case (and is totally out of our hands) we will refund your money or happily rebook for another time.

Can we have a go at steering?

Unfortunately our insurance does not allow for passengers to steer the boat. Just relax, and we’ll do all of that for you!

What clothes do we need to bring?

Depends if you ask Steve or Andrew! Steve would bring 18 changes of clothes, to cope with all weathers/moods/ colour palettes and social occasions – Andrew would pack one pair of trousers, one pair of shorts, and 3 t-shirts (all Navy blue!). Bring what you like, but we do ask for only soft -soled shoes to be worn onboard, and for you to be prepared for an “English Summer”! (You know what we mean!)

Will our valuables be safe on board?

There is a small, personal digital safe for guests in the guest suite for use throughout your stay.

Do we have to have a Covid test, or any particular vaccinations?

No. At the current time there is no expectation for guests to have a Covid test, and all vaccinations are your decision. (This is, of course, subject to change – but we will inform guests near their booking if it does.)

How fast will we be travelling?

Although the average is lower, our top speed on the non-tidal Thames is 5 mph! If you want a High-octane ride, then Excalibur is not for you, and you might be happier on a Thames Rib!

Can hair curlers/ straighteners or an iron be used on Excalibur?

Due to the power they take, and the fire risk they can be, such items cannot be used on board. However, a low-voltage hairdryer is available for use.

Will we be eating alone?

Yes. Unless you ask guests aboard, you will be eating alone. Weather permitting you can dine alfresco, but usually we will serve dinner in the wheelhouse with 360° views.

Is there a danger that we will be hit by the sails?

None at all! There are no sails on Excalibur, just a very quiet and efficient engine.

About Excalibur

Excalibur is a 65ft replica Dutch Barge, based on the River Thames. Guests are normally invited to board at Turks Pier by Kingston Bridge, with ample safe parking at the Bentall Centre just five minutes away. Our normal cruising ground for a lunch, dinner and afternoon tea is from Kingston to Teddington, then back upstream to Hampton Court Palace, where we will moor for your meal. Then back to Kingston to disembark after a super day on the historic Thames.

The joy of our bespoke operation is we are flexible to your needs and requirements. Many great events take place on or alongside the Thames, Henley Royal Regatta, Royal Windsor Horse Show and Marlow Food Festival to name just three. Whenever these happen, Excalibur will be there offering great day trips or accomodation. Please call or email for availability.
